HISTORY
Few names in the cigar industry carry the same level of passion, expertise, and authenticity as Nicholas Melillo, the founder of Foundation Cigar Company. With over two decades of experience in tobacco sourcing, blending, and cigar production, Nicholas has earned a reputation as one of the most respected figures in the premium cigar world.
Born and raised in Connecticut, home to some of the world’s finest tobacco, Nicholas developed an early appreciation for the craft. His journey into cigars began at a young age, leading him to Nicaragua, where he immersed himself in the rich traditions of cigar making. As the former head of production and tobacco sourcing for one of the largest Nicaraguan cigar manufacturers, Nicholas spent years working directly with farmers, selecting the finest tobaccos, and perfecting the art of blending.
In 2015, he founded Foundation Cigar Company with a mission to blend old-world traditions with modern craftsmanship. His portfolio of cigars reflects a deep respect for history, culture, and the artistry of tobacco. Whether it’s the award-winning El Güegüense, the deeply personal Tabernacle, or the tribute to his Connecticut roots in Charter Oak, each blend tells a story of dedication, heritage, and excellence.
Nicholas’s hands-on approach ensures that every cigar bearing the Foundation name meets the highest standards of quality, balance, and complexity. With a deep love for tobacco, history, and storytelling, he continues to push the boundaries of innovation while honouring the timeless traditions of premium cigar making.
OLMEC CLARO
The Olmecs are the most mysterious and ancient civilisation of the early Americas. The Olmecs predate the Mayans and Aztecs and are considered the “Mother Culture” of Mesoamerica. They were the first to create mathematically precise calendars, pyramids, and, as far as we know, the first to smoke cigars. The heartland of the Olmecs is in the tropical lowlands of the modern-day Mexican states of Veracruz, Tabasco, and San Andrés Tuxtla. Today, this region is still known for growing some of the finest San Andrés Negro wrapper tobacco. This seed variety is considered one of the oldest in the world.
The blend delivers a full-bodied smoking experience with rich flavours of cacao, dark espresso, and spice without being too aggressive.
